Die nichtkommerzielle Digitalwelt - Vortrag von Stefan Mey (DE)

Jenseits der Silicon-Valley-Welt von Google, Meta und Amazon gibt es einen kleinen, feinen Kosmos nichtkommerzieller Digitalprojekte. Die Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia zählt etwa dazu, der Messenger Signal, die Twitter-Alternative Mastodon, der Browser Firefox oder das Kartenprojekt OpenStreetMap.

Vieles ist dort anders: Die Beteiligten sitzen oft nicht in den USA, sondern in Europa, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Raum. Sie treibt die Freude an, der Menschheit etwas Nützliches zur Verfügung zu stellen – und nicht der Zwang, Gewinne zu erwirtschaften. Die Projekte arbeiten transparent und müssen weder mit Geld noch mit Daten bezahlt werden.

Wie funktionierte diese nichtkommerzielle Digitalwelt, wer sind die 10 wichtigsten Vertreter und wie kann man die Projekte nutzen oder sich gar aktiv beteiligen?

The non-commercial digital world – lecture by Stefan Mey (in German)

Beyond the Silicon Valley world of Google, Meta, and Amazon, there exists a small, refined cosmos of non-commercial digital projects. The online encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of them, as well as the messenger Signal, the Twitter alternative Mastodon, the browser Firefox, or the mapping project OpenStreetMap. 

Much is different there: participants are often not based in the USA, but in Europe, especially in the German-speaking region. What drives them is the joy of providing something useful to humanity – and not the obligation to generate profits. These projects operate transparently and do not require payment either in money or data.

How does this non-commercial digital world function, who are its 10 most important representatives, and how can one utilize or even actively participate in these projects?
